Getting Involved With Your Community
The community is a powerful force for good, but can often face barriers to participation. This is particularly true of older people.
The NDIS funds a range of social and community participation activities. Our support workers can help you to join book clubs, sporting teams and music festivals that align with your interests and goals.
Social and community activities
Getting involved with your community is an important part of living a happy, healthy life. It fosters a sense of belonging, and provides many benefits like: broader social networks, stronger friendships, enhanced skill development, and a boost in confidence.
In addition, it is an excellent way to make new friends and learn more about the world around you. Community participation activities can include anything from a movie night or games afternoon to volunteering or joining a club or support group. It may even involve learning new skills through workshops and community classes. These skills can be applied in real-life situations such as shopping for groceries or managing public transport.
At STARR Care, we provide innovative community participation NDIS to help participants find their independence and engage with the world on their own terms. Our team of dedicated support workers will help you find the best activities for your lifestyle.
It can mean going to your local cafe, playing netball with a friend, bushwalking or taking a photography class. It could be anything you want it to be, and we will support you every step of the way. Our activities are tailored to meet your needs, and you will be paired with an experienced support worker who understands your strengths and goals.
Sport and recreation
In addition to sports and recreational activities, Community Participation Perth offers a variety of workshops to build skills in the areas of art and music. These workshops and classes offer participants opportunities to develop social and practical life skills in a safe, supportive environment. Our support workers are also available to accompany participants on excursions or activities that align with their interests, whether it’s going to the cinema or a local sporting event.
The City of South Perth recently secured $5.5 million from the Department of Health and Ageing for the Female Facilities Stream program to improve changerooms, lighting and other equipment at six local sporting reserves in the City, including George Burnett Park and Richardson Park in Karawara, Bill Grayden and Collier Reserve in Como, Challenger Reserve in Manning, and Morris Mundy Reserve in Kensington. These upgrades will provide a greater range of training and playing options for females and encourage participation in sport.
Social and community participation is a core support category under the NDIS, meaning that any assistance you receive to engage in these activities is considered reasonable and necessary based on your NDIS plan goals. This means your support worker can accompany you to a book club, take you to sports practice, or even join you at a music festival!
Innovative community participation
Innovative community participation activities help participants develop new skills, explore their interests and passions and connect with the community. These activities can range from taking part in a cooking class to experimenting with different art mediums. They can also involve going to a dance class, attending fitness classes and participating in adapted sports and recreational activities.
These activities are a key support category in the NDIS and can be covered by your NDIS plan. The only requirement is that the assistance you receive is considered reasonable and necessary in relation to your NDIS plan goals.
The benefits of engaging in these activities include a boost to social and emotional wellbeing, improved self-esteem, increased independence, stronger friendships, and a sense of belonging. They can also lead to opportunities for employment, volunteering and a greater quality of life.
