NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides lifelong support for participants. Its personalised funding model identifies the aids and equipment needed to help people achieve their goals and live their best lives. To qualify for the NDIS, a person must have a permanent disability that significantly affects their everyday functioning and has acquired their condition before the age of 65. The NDIS offers a variety of support services, including health and wellbeing, social participation, independence and daily living activities.

The NDIS aims to transform the current disability system into a world-leading, equitable and sustainable system of supports and options for all Australians with a permanent disability. It also aims to improve health outcomes by ensuring that individuals have the right level of support at the right time. To achieve this, the NDIS will provide support that allows participants to connect with a range of specialised support providers and work towards their goals. It will also provide a range of flexible arrangements to manage your plan, allowing you to choose the best service providers for you.

NDIS funds are allocated across eight broad categories, with each category providing a specific type of support. These categories are Consumables, Mobility and Equipment, Health & Wellbeing, Personal Care, Assistance with Daily Living and Recreation, Home Modifications, Transport and NDIS Admin. The NDIS also enables participants to self-manage their funding, allowing them to choose their own service providers and have full control over how their funding is used.

In addition to its many benefits, the NDIS has a number of additional requirements that must be met in order for participants to receive the highest levels of support and quality services. One of these is that children and young people under the parental responsibility of someone else will be represented by a person who is able to make decisions for them, called their child representative. For this reason, it is important for families to ensure that their child’s representative has access to information about the NDIS so that they are able to discuss options and make informed choices.
